Trojan horse uses unpatched MS Office hole |
|
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, October 04, 2005 - 02:53 AM |
Microsoft Corp. said today that it's investigating a recently released Trojan horse program that targets a hole in its Microsoft Office software suite that was first identified in April.
Symantec Corp. issued an advisory that the Trojan horse, named Backdoor.Hesive, can arrive as a Microsoft Access file, exploiting a Microsoft Jet Database Engine buffer overflow. The code can allow an unauthorized user access, enabling an intruder to upload files, modify registry values and get system and network information, said Symantec.

Novell OpenSUSE Server Hacked |
|
Posted by: Admin on Sunday, October 02, 2005 - 02:43 PM |
A company server that some workers at Novell apparently used for gaming purposes was hacked into and then used to scan for vulnerable ports on potentially millions of computers worldwide, according to an Internet security consultant.
The scans, which have been going on since Sept. 21, are targeted at TCP Port 22 -- the default port for Secure Shell (SSH) services. SSH programs are used to log into other computers over a network or to execute remote commands and move files between machines in a secure fashion. Scans against the port are often an indication that hackers are looking for vulnerable SSH systems that they can break into and take control of.

Microsoft probes report of IE flaw |

Posted by: Admin on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 04:59 PM |
A new flaw in Internet Explorer could be exploited to launch spoof-based attacks, or access and change data on vulnerable PCs, security experts have warned.
The problem lies in the way Microsoft has implemented a JavaScript component in its Web browser, security researcher Amit Klein wrote in a research document. Internet Explorer does not validate some data fields provided by a PC when the component, called XmlHttpRequest, is used, he wrote.

Google Web Accelerator (GWA) = Highly Invasive Spyware? |
|
Posted by: Admin on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 05:25 PM |
 |
The new Google application Web Accelerator helps broadband web surfers to surf the web even faster. The Web Accelerator pulls pages from Google's chached database to help the delivery of the pages. Basically your not viewing the site live, just a snapshot of the site.
Google also predicts where the user is going to click, and pre-caches those pages. They use a proprietary alogrithm to determine where the user will click next. The problem then is, what about sites that change everyday such as Freshmeat.net or CNET? Google would have to keep an update copy of every page, on the whole Internet in order to keep up with the demand for this product. The application is a free download.

NASA Admin Says Shuttle and ISS are Mistakes |

"NASA Administrator Michael Griffin was recently interviewed by the USA Today Editorial Board regarding the current direction of the U.S. Space Program, and in the interview he suggested that the past three decades have been a huge mistake and a waste of resources. As a total cost for both programs that has exceeded $250 Billion, you have to wonder what other useful things could have been developed using the same resources. Griffin quoted in the interview regarding if the shuttle had been a mistake "My opinion is that it was... It was a design which was extremely aggressive and just barely possible." Regarding the ISS: "Had the decision been mine, we would not have built the space station we're building in the orbit we're building it in.""

More Flaws in Firefox Than IE, Symantec Says |
|
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 03:29 AM |
In its semiannual report about Internet security threats, released last week, IT security vendor Symantec Corp. said the open-source Firefox Web browser had more confirmed vulnerabilities than Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer did in the first six months of the year.
But Symantec and security analysts said the vulnerability data doesn't necessarily mean that Firefox is less secure than its proponents have claimed or that Internet Explorer is a safer browser than many users believe it to be.

Sophisticated phishing targets Yahoo users |
|
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 03:27 AM |
 |
A new phishing method is targeting users of Yahoo Inc.'s Web site by recording their username and password while logging them into a legitimate area of the portal, according to Websense Inc., a Web security software firm.
Users receive an instant message or e-mail purporting to be from a friend wanting to show photos from a vacation or birthday party. The message has a link to the phishing site, which records the user's ID and password while forwarding the user to the real Yahoo Photos site. "It would be difficult for the user to know they'd actually been phished," said Ross Paul, Websense product manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Google Opens Gmail Service to Public |
|
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 - 10:53 AM |
When Google unveiled its instant messaging client yesterday, there was only one problem: Google Talk requires a Gmail account, which has been invitation-only since its beta debut in 2004. This changed on Thursday, however, as Google opened Gmail to anyone in the United States with a mobile phone.
The mobile phone requirement was designed to prevent Gmail accounts from being created by robots and stop spammers from signing up multiple times. Google will send an invitation code via SMS, which can then be used to register with Gmail. Only one account may be created per phone number.

Chinese Websites Used As Launchpads For Cracking |
|
Posted by: Admin on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 11:51 AM |
 |
An anonymous reader writes "A Washington Post article reports that Chinese networks are being used to breach hundreds of unclassified U.S. government systems. The article goes on to say that some analysts believe the activity to be tied to the Chinese government, although there is also some dissent." From the article: "Whether the attacks constitute a coordinated Chinese government campaign to penetrate U.S. networks and spy on government databanks has divided U.S. analysts. Some in the Pentagon are said to be convinced of official Chinese involvement; others see the electronic probing as the work of other hackers simply using Chinese networks to disguise the origins of the attacks."

Following closely on the heels of its Monday release of Google Desktop 2, Internet search giant Google—whcih si quickly becoming a leading online media company—today launched Google Talk, an instant messaging (IM) solution. Based on the Jabber IM standard, Google Talk can communicate with users of Jabber, iChat, and Trillian, and Google says it will soon open up the tool to users of MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).
Google Talk is open to the public and is free, without ads, and requires a Gmail user account. Netscape launches version 8.0 |
|
Posted by: Admin on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 09:29 PM |
 |
Netscape has officially launched the latest version of its browser, Netscape 8.0, according to reports. Although the browser is based on Firefox, it also supports the Internet Explorer engine, and so will be able to render more sites than will Firefox alone. The final version also comes with a heavy emphasis on security, with built-in anti-phishing safeguards. The browser adjusts its security settings automatically, based on a regularly-updated blacklist of dangerous or malicious sites. "The browser is like a hybrid car that combines the usability of Internet Explorer with the security of Firefox," Andrew Weinstein, a spokesman for America Online/Netscape, told Reuters. Recently, Firefox's security message has been slightly tarnished, after a spate of vulnerabilities were identified in the open source browser. It remains to be seen whether this will have an impact on the uptake of the new offering from Netscape. ®

Virus Writers Take Advantage of Tsunami |
|
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 08:41 PM |

It looks like a plea for donations for tsunami relief, but it's really a virus. That's just too low for words.
"Virus experts at Sophos have discovered a mass-mailing worm that poses as a plea for donations to help with the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.
"The W32/VBSun-A worm spreads via email, tempting innocent users into clicking onto its malicious attachment by pretending to be information about how to donate to a tsunami relief effort. However, running the attached file will not only forward the virus to other internet users but can also initiate a denial-of-service attack against a German hacking website."

This worm infects certain web sites by exploiting a vulnerability in phpBB, a popular package used to create Internet forums. Santy.a is spreading rapidly, and has caused an epidemic. However, this does not directly affect end users - although the worm infects web sites, it does not infect computers used to view these sites.

An email worm which poses as a Christmas greeting began spreading widely yesterday. Zafi-D comes as an infectious attachment to emails written in a variety of different languages, including English, Spanish, Russian, Swedish and Hungarian. Anti-virus firms believe the worm was created in Hungary.
Typically infected emails have subject lines such as 'FW: Merry Christmas', 'Happy HollyDays!' and 'Feliz Navidad!'. Embedded inside each email is a crude animated GIF graphic of two 'smiley' faces. The attachment name is made up of the word "postcard" in the respective language, random numbers and the extension .pif, .cmd, .bat, or .com. Windows users who open the attached file get infected.

Use Linux and you will be sued, Ballmer tells governments |
|
Posted by: Admin on Saturday, November 20, 2004 - 06:06 AM |
Asian governments using Linux will be sued for IP violations, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said today in Singapore. He did not specify that Microsoft would be the company doing the suing, but it's difficult to read the claim as anything other than a declaration of IP war.
According to a Reuters report (which we fervently hope will produce one of Ballmer's fascinating 'I was misquoted' rebuttals*), Ballmer told Microsoft's Asian Government Leaders Forum that Linux violates more than 228 patents. Come on Steve, don't hold back - what you mean 'more than 228' - 229? 230? Don't pull your punches to soften the blow to the community. "Some day," he continued, "for all countries that are entering the WTO [World Trade Organization], somebody will come and look for money owing to the rights for that intellectual property."

Microsoft prepares to kill Linux with different Windows flavours |
|
Posted by: Admin on Monday, October 11, 2004 - 06:12 AM |
 |
Microsoft is developing versions of Windows with only a subset of its code base, designed for specific server tasks. The intention is to reduce maintenance costs and create products that are less vulnerable to attack, and so tackle head-on the threat posed by Linux.
The new "role-based" products may appear in 2007, when the server version of Longhorn is scheduled for release. Offering a smaller code base would mark a significant technical shift for Microsoft and could help address the competitive threat posed by Linux. But it also presents significant engineering challenges for the company, industry analysts said.

This sounds trivial but the difference helps to understand what's happening here. Authorization is what determines if authentication needs to happen.

We are pleased to announce the availablity of PostNuke .75 Gold release, a major milestone realized on the road to 1.0.
This release marks the departure from PHP-Nuke based code and provides a solid core foundation as the technical aspects of PostNuke have been defined, i.e., database abstraction, templating system, etc. We see this release as the bridge between the older PN model to the newer model .8 will introduce thus making the transition much easier for most to move up to the latest versions with the least amount of hassle. And as the momentum builds you can expect good things from PN as we move towards the .8 release.

|
Posted by: Admin on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:21 PM |
Security researchers say they're starting to find flaws in Microsoft's latest major update for Windows XP.
Last week, German company Heise Security announced that two flaws could be used to circumvent the new warnings that Windows XP Service Pack 2, or SP2, normally would display about running untrusted programs, potentially giving a leg up to a would-be intruder's attempts to execute code on a victim's PC.

New Worm Travels by IM |
|
Posted by: Admin on Sunday, August 22, 2004 - 01:19 PM |
 |
new version of the worm that spread from infected Microsoft Web servers in June has been identified and is using instant messages and infected Web sites in Russia, Uruguay, and the United States to spread itself, according to one security company.
Researchers at PivX Solutions of Newport Beach, California, have intercepted new malicious code closely resembling that from widespread attacks in June attributed to a worm named "Scob" or "Download.ject." The new attacks use mass-distributed instant messages to lure Internet users to Web sites that distribute malicious code similar to Download.ject, says Thor Larholm, senior security researcher at PivX.

MyDoom's Second Stage Strikes At Microsoft |
|
Posted by: Admin on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 01:41 PM |
Although the spread of MyDoom.o leveled off Monday night and Tuesday morning, by mid-day Tuesday a second-round attack began by using MyDoom's infected systems to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack on Microsoft.com.
But Microsoft's site has weathered the new attack. Web performance meteringfirm AlertSite, for instance, reported that it had seen no problems accessing the site as of 4:00 p.m. EDT. And in an e-mailed statement, a Microsoft spokesperson said it "has taken steps to ensure that Microsoft.com remains available. The network is stable and has been consistently accessible to customers."

A surge in Internet scanning activity in the past week could indicate a fresh wave of attacks on e-commerce servers, UK-based Web services company Netcraft warned today.
The firm has detected a surge in scans of port 443, used by Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), a technology designed for securely transmitting financial data such as e-commerce transactions. The surge began on 15 July, the day before the public disclosure of a critical flaw in a server module called mod_ssl.

A Trojan horse disguised as CNN pictures of Osama Bin Laden committing suicide is being distributed on the Internet A new way of enticing users to open a Trojan horse called Hackarmy was discovered by antivirus firm Sophos on Friday after it was posted on several Internet news groups.
The message claims to contain pictures taken by CNN journalists of Osama Bin Laden's suicide but, once the file is opened, it installs a Trojan horse that effectively recruits the infected machine into the author's zombie army, which can then be used to distribute spam or launch DDoS attacks.

All eyes on virus protection at Athens Olympics |
|
Posted by: Admin on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 07:41 AM |
 |
Terrorism isn't the only security threat officials are worried about at this summer's Olympic Games in Athens. They're also concerned about viruses and worm attacks that could cripple the games' data network.
"Our biggest concern is that somebody could intentionally or by mistake infect one of the networks and create severe damage," said Jean Chevallier, executive vice president at Atos Origin, the Paris-based company in charge of building the data and broadcast networks for the Olympic games in Athens. "We don't want any type of traffic incident that could delay the posting of results or slow the network in any way," Chevallier said.
