A £5,000 prize was still up for grabs on Thursday afternoon, after no-one managed to crack into VIA Technologies' new StrongBox system. But all could change by the weekend.
VIA has offered the prize to anyone who can successfully break into a system using VIA StrongBox software and PadLock hardware, which is meant to protect against identity theft and the physical loss of data.

Novell OpenSUSE Server Hacked |
|
Posted by: Admin on Sunday, October 02, 2005 - 02:43 PM |

A company server that some workers at Novell apparently used for gaming purposes was hacked into and then used to scan for vulnerable ports on potentially millions of computers worldwide, according to an Internet security consultant.
The scans, which have been going on since Sept. 21, are targeted at TCP Port 22 -- the default port for Secure Shell (SSH) services. SSH programs are used to log into other computers over a network or to execute remote commands and move files between machines in a secure fashion. Scans against the port are often an indication that hackers are looking for vulnerable SSH systems that they can break into and take control of.

The problem lies in the way Microsoft has implemented a JavaScript component in its Web browser, security researcher Amit Klein wrote in a research document. Internet Explorer does not validate some data fields provided by a PC when the component, called XmlHttpRequest, is used, he wrote.

Google Web Accelerator (GWA) = Highly Invasive Spyware? |
|
Posted by: Admin on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 05:25 PM |
The new Google application Web Accelerator helps broadband web surfers to surf the web even faster. The Web Accelerator pulls pages from Google's chached database to help the delivery of the pages. Basically your not viewing the site live, just a snapshot of the site.
Google also predicts where the user is going to click, and pre-caches those pages. They use a proprietary alogrithm to determine where the user will click next. The problem then is, what about sites that change everyday such as Freshmeat.net or CNET? Google would have to keep an update copy of every page, on the whole Internet in order to keep up with the demand for this product. The application is a free download.
