LAST YEAR there were 79,000 attempts to break into US government networks, The Washington Post reported.
Many of the attacks originate from China, but it’s unclear whether they are sponsored by the Communist government.
It quotes an unnamed US insider as saying the problem has been investigated for several years, but it’s difficult to track down exactly where the attacks originate.

Google Opens Gmail Service to Public |

When Google unveiled its instant messaging client yesterday, there was only one problem: Google Talk requires a Gmail account, which has been invitation-only since its beta debut in 2004. This changed on Thursday, however, as Google opened Gmail to anyone in the United States with a mobile phone.
The mobile phone requirement was designed to prevent Gmail accounts from being created by robots and stop spammers from signing up multiple times. Google will send an invitation code via SMS, which can then be used to register with Gmail. Only one account may be created per phone number.

Chinese Websites Used As Launchpads For Cracking |
|
Posted by: Admin on Thursday, August 25, 2005 - 11:51 AM |
An anonymous reader writes "A Washington Post article reports that Chinese networks are being used to breach hundreds of unclassified U.S. government systems. The article goes on to say that some analysts believe the activity to be tied to the Chinese government, although there is also some dissent." From the article: "Whether the attacks constitute a coordinated Chinese government campaign to penetrate U.S. networks and spy on government databanks has divided U.S. analysts. Some in the Pentagon are said to be convinced of official Chinese involvement; others see the electronic probing as the work of other hackers simply using Chinese networks to disguise the origins of the attacks."

"It's hard to believe it, but 10 short years ago today saw the launch of Windows '95. Here is an archive of the Washington Post's story on the day. As part of the launch, Microsoft paid $12,000,000 for the rights to use the Rolling Stones' song "Start Me Up" (containing the prophetic line 'You make a grown man cry'). "

Posted by: Admin on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 - 11:14 AM |
Following closely on the heels of its Monday release of Google Desktop 2, Internet search giant Google—whcih si quickly becoming a leading online media company—today launched Google Talk, an instant messaging (IM) solution. Based on the Jabber IM standard, Google Talk can communicate with users of Jabber, iChat, and Trillian, and Google says it will soon open up the tool to users of MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).
Google Talk is open to the public and is free, without ads, and requires a Gmail user account. Users without a Gmail account will receive one when they sign up for Google Talk, the company says, assuming they don't mind providing Google with their cellphone number in order to prevent people from squatting on valuable email addresses.
